My name is Yukichi. I am a swordsman, and a fairly competent one at that. When I was growing up, I had a lord, but then he died without heirs, and he was tozama anyway, so our han was reorganized. I could have stayed on, but I was brought up with the idea that you don't serve two masters, so I'm a rônin now. It's a hard-knock life, but it could be worse.

I've been a bodyguard and a sell-sword. I try to do that as little as possible because they don't suit me. Most of my revenue comes from gambling. Most of my material possessions have come from the kindness of strangers, although I'd suggest not being too kind to me, as I will jettison things as and when I'm sick of carrying them (or would rather have a hot meal instead).

Whatever stories you've heard about me, they don't come close to approximating the reality.

Never married. No children, at least none I know about. I get lonely sometimes, but it's better this way. I have someone I love in Edo, but we don't see each other. Much. It's hard, but you learn to deal.

I have two brothers. One sold his status and is a merchant in Kakegawa now; he has five children, or possibly eight, and I expect it will be twelve when I see him next. The other one, like me, is a rônin, and we don't really know where he is. My father is in Kanagawa, and my mother died when I was little.

I also have a traveling companion whom I don't understand very well, but we'll live. If we don't tear each other up first.

Oh, and I have a student, too. God help us all.
